CE Credits on Cruises

The ship provides the room. An accredited provider provides the credits. Here is how to check them.

Who Grants Continuing-Education Credits at Sea

The most important fact about CE credits on cruises is simple: the ship does not grant them. An education provider does — a company, association, university or professional society that has been approved by the accrediting body for your field.

Each profession has its own system. Medical programs are typically offered by providers accredited for continuing medical education; dental, nursing and pharmacy credits have their own approval bodies; lawyers earn CLE approved by state bars; accountants look for CPE that meets their state board’s standards. A seminar cruise sponsor should be able to tell you exactly which approval applies, the number of hours and the type of credit (for example, ethics or general hours).

Questions to Ask Before You Register

  • Who is the accredited provider, and what is its approval or provider number?
  • How many hours does the full program carry, and in which credit categories?
  • Is the program approved for my state or country, or only for some jurisdictions?
  • How is attendance recorded, and when will I receive my certificate?
  • Are any hours self-study or online, and does my board accept that format?
  • What happens to my credits if a session is cancelled because of weather or a schedule change?

Credit Hours and Cruise Days

Seminar schedules are built around the itinerary. A seven-night cruise with two or three sea days might carry a set number of hours split across mornings, with port days left largely free. Longer voyages can carry more hours. Treat any advertised total as the maximum you can earn if you attend every session; your certificate will reflect the time you were in the room.

CE Credit Questions

Does the cruise line award my CE credits?

No. Credits come from the accredited education provider that runs the seminar. The cruise line supplies the ship and, sometimes, the meeting room; it does not certify the content.

How do I know my state board will accept the hours?

Ask the seminar sponsor which accrediting body approved the program and how many hours it carries, then check that against your board’s rules. If in doubt, contact your board before you pay.

Can I earn credits if I miss a session for a shore excursion?

Usually only for the sessions you attend. Most providers track attendance and issue certificates for the hours you were actually present.
